Costly Intermediation and the Poverty of Nations1

چکیده
Distortions in private investment due to credit frictions, and in public investment due to corruption and bureaucratic inefficiencies, have both been suggested as important factors in accounting for the cross-country per capita income distribution. We introduce two modiÞcations to the standard one-sector neoclassical growth model to incorporate these distortions. The model is calibrated using data from 79 countries to examine the quantitative implication of these margins. We Þnd that Þnancial frictions account for less than 2% of the cross-country variation in relative income. Even accounting for mismeasurement, Þnancial frictions typically explain less than 5% of the income gap between the Þve richest and the Þve poorest countries in the world. Distortions in the public investment process, on the other hand, seem more promising. There is both more variation in the measured value of the public capital distortion and it can account for more than 25% of the income gap between the richest and poorest countries in our sample. Financial Intermediation and Equity Investment with Costly Monitoring
This paper studies the efficiency of equilibria in a productive OLG economy where the process of financial intermediation is characterized by costly state verification. Both competitive equilibria and Constrained Pareto Optimal allocations are characterized. It is shown that market outcomes can be socially inefficient, even when a weaker notion than Pareto optimality is considered.

متن کاملLong-term and Short-term Effects of Financial Intermediation on Economic Growth
Financial intermediation in Iran's banking system is negatively affected at least in two ways. First, there are many similarities between financial intermediation and usurious activities in the common interpretation of interest-free banking law. This encourages the banks to participate in various commercial activities. Second, the price setting policies of the central bank makes investment more...
متن کاملAgency Costs in Dynamic Economic Models
We consider an overlapping generations economy where capital is produced from bank loans under stochastic constant returns to scale, and subject to idiosyncratic shocks whose realisations are costly to verify. Our formulation differs from earlier work in permitting investment projects to be in®nitely divisible and private agency costs to be convex. If there are external economies to ®nancial in...
